INITIATIVE SUMMARY

Bring light and vibrancy to Johannesburg's iconic Nelson Mandela Bridge and Ntemi Piliso Street with solar-powered lights. This project aims to not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of these key urban landmarks but also make it safe for people to travel through these iconic landmarks, fostering a sense of pride, safety, and community. The initial phase involves the placement of solar lights and LED colour lights on the bridge.

Nelson Mandela Bridge Glass

Reinvigorate the beauty of the Nelson Mandela Bridge by replacing damaged glass panels. This initiative not only addresses safety concerns but also preserves the iconic features of the bridge. This iconic landmark is world-renowned for its luminous nature in Johannesburg’s night sky. Let us come together to breathe light back into this landmark and honour the late Nelson Mandela for many more Joburg nights.

Repair of Water Leaks by Johannesburg Water

Address the immediate need for water infrastructure maintenance. This project focuses on repairing water leaks in Phase 0. Spearheaded by Joburg Water, the initiative contributes to the city's sustainability by ensuring efficient water management. By bettering our water infrastructure maintenance today, we better the quality of our water tomorrow.

Adopt a Traffic Light

Improve traffic flow and safety by adopting and maintaining traffic lights in the inner city. Estimated at R500,000 per light, this initiative, currently in the survey phase, aims to enhance the urban experience and reduce congestion in critical areas.

Pothole Repairs

Enhance road safety and vehicle maintenance by addressing potholes on the Mandela Bridge and Ntemi Piliso Street. The estimated cost is R5,000 per pothole. A survey is ongoing to assess the extent of repairs.

Fixing Sidewalks

Prioritise pedestrian safety and accessibility by repairing sidewalks on the Nelson Mandela Bridge and Ntemi Piliso Street. While the estimated cost is still to be confirmed, this project is currently in the survey phase, and it aims to create a more pedestrian-friendly urban environment.

Install VumaCam Cameras

Boost public safety by fast-tracking the installation of public space cameras that are linked to an off-site monitoring control room. This initiative aims to improve safety in the CBD by enhancing surveillance capabilities and creating a safer urban environment for all.

Install free connectivity

Connect the city to the internet by installing Wi-Fi across Phase 0 (with plans for expansion). While the estimated cost is yet to be confirmed, this project aims to promote digital inclusion and connectivity in Johannesburg’s landscape.

Waste Management

Establish a sustainable regional solid waste management system, focusing on waste-to-energy solutions. This comprehensive project aims to create a circular economy, turning waste into a valuable resource, and fostering financial inclusion through 'trash-for-cash' micro-entrepreneurship.  The project aims to establish a sustainable regional solid waste management system in the City of Johannesburg, particularly benefiting JoziGold patrons. The proposed waste-to-energy initiative involves utilizing an MSWM (Municipal Solid Waste Management) process, with an engineered landfill as the ultimate disposal solution.

CBD Renewable Energy Feasibility Assessment

Partner with Accenture to conduct a feasibility study for implementing renewable energy solutions in the Central Business District (CBD). Accenture is currently funding the feasibility phase, with the goal of creating a more sustainable and energy-efficient urban environment.

Collaborate with Standard Bank to clean the inner-city around Phase 1 and transform trash into art. This initiative not only beautifies the urban landscape but also promotes environmental consciousness and community engagement.

Solar Lights Empowerment Project - Illuminating Communities

In the radiant pursuit of sustainable lighting solutions, our Solar Lights Empowerment Project enters Phase 1, bringing light to the darkest corners and empowering communities. The following areas are our key application areas: streets/roads, villages/rural areas, urban centres, parks, sidewalks and places that do not have access to electricity.

R8,602,796 will propel us forward in illuminating key areas, fostering safety, and enhancing the quality of life for many.

JHB Homelessness Baseline Survey

Embark on a journey of social change by supporting our Baseline Survey on homelessness in Johannesburg. In alliance with the University of Pittsburgh, this initiative is not just about numbers; it's about understanding the stories and struggles of those experiencing homelessness in our city. This initiative aims to unveil the root causes of homelessness and advocate for comprehensive solutions, bringing about meaningful change in the fight against homelessness.

Join forces with us in the battle against homelessness by contributing towards hiring a Social Strategy Consultant who will help us develop and manage a Johannesburg Homelessness Strategy. Your support will empower us to create and implement a robust plan, managing initiatives alongside other organisations that work towards changing the narrative and situation of the homeless. We want to invest in strategic, impactful change, addressing the systemic issues perpetuating homelessness.

Hillbrow Bathhouse

Picture a corner in Hillbrow transformed into a sanctuary for those in need. Your contribution can help renovate existing properties, turn the bathhouse into a drop-in centre, furnish the space, and cover annual operating costs for the first year. This is not just a donation; it's an investment in creating a safe space that challenges the status quo, redefining how society cares for its most vulnerable. As a passionate advocate for social change, stand with us in transforming a shelter into the Impilo Support Centre. Your donation will fuel a project that goes beyond shelter; it's a hub for comprehensive support services. This is a rallying call for social activists—your contribution is a testament to your commitment to reshaping societal structures and empowering those in need.
