Main Street Sundays
You don’t have to be born in Jozi to see the beauty it has given birth to. Everyone knows the hustle and bustle of the city, but there’s also a calm that comes with closing the streets corner to corner and inviting the ones who once came to dig for gold to now come make golden memories of eGoli.
Main Street Sundays is an open invite, no entry fee needed, for you to see and be part of the CBD. It brings a world-class city experience to Jozi, the kind other cities like Bogotá and Cape Town have embraced by closing off the hooting and hollering and opening the street up to little feet, skates, bikes and prams, so the whole fam can truly feel like this is their Jozi. My Jozi.
What the day looks like
Corner to corner, post to post, 700 to 1000 metres closed off to taxis and cars, and opened up for everyone to see what the city is alive with.
From the art, the kids, the laughter, the activities. From touching the city and the people, the stories start telling themselves, and you get to be part of them.
There’ll be lanes for cyclists, skaters, and those who just want to take a stroll with their loved ones or push a stroller at an easy pace. Play areas too, because fun is not only found in the burbs.
Stop by the eateries, whether you’re stepping inside or sitting out on the paving, and take in the street art, the beauty of the tall buildings, and the even taller legends made in this city.
Being in Jozi is a whole feeling. And this is one of those days where you get to experience that feeling in a city that’s always called busy but, on this Sunday, makes space for you to slow down, take it in, and enjoy it all.
No fear, Jozi My Jozi is here
There’ll be no drivers playing Tetris with taxis in traffic. There’ll be marshals, volunteers, JMPD and EMS on site, ready to assist and show you the way, along with signage so you know where you are and where to go. No need to power walk. Take your time and enjoy the CBD as it opens itself up to you like you’ve never seen it before.
Why are we doing this?
Jozi My Jozi is about bringing people back into the city, not just to move through it, but to experience it. To walk it. To meet the people. To feel pride in what’s already here. Most people only know the CBD from behind a window. This is about stepping onto the pavement and taking your time.
It’s about creating a space that feels safe and open. Supporting the businesses that keep the city going. And making it easier to walk, cycle and move through Jozi in a more human way.
Because the city belongs to the people in it.
