Main Street Sundays

Taking Back the Streets of Jozi

Temperatures might be dipping, but the sun is out and so are we! Main Street Sundays is your chance to meet Jozi at walking pace – not dodging taxis and traffic or through a car window, but up close and vibey. We’re closing off the roads to cars and taking back our streets for the day, and everyone’s invited. Woza, Jozi! Bring the whole group chat, the little ones, ama-2k and even gogo, and make a day of it. With food, art, music, activities, and plenty more for all ages, it’s sure to be a Sunday to remember. It’s time to meet your streets again and make some golden. Bring a chair and get comfortable, or warm up with some street games. Kuzoba mnandi!

Main Street Sundays

You don’t have to be born in Jozi to see its gritty beauty. Everyone knows the hustle and bustle of the city, but there’s so much more to eGoli. Main Street Sundays is an open invite, no entry fee needed, for you to see and be part of the CBD. It’s a world-class up-close-and-personal city experience to Jozi, by shutting out the cars and opening the street up to little feet, skates, bikes and prams, so the whole fam can truly feel like this is their Jozi.

Main Street Sundays is part of a 50-year global movement that's transformed cities from Bogotá to Los Angeles to Cape Town. Get involved, tell your neighbours, bring the kids, and join us for a car-free day celebrating community, culture, and connection in the heart of Jozi.

What the day looks like

Corner to corner, post to post, one kilometres closed off to taxis and cars and opened up for everyone to see the city truly alive.

The art, the kids, the laughter, the activities. Neighbours and visitors, meeting on common ground. The stories start telling themselves, and you get to be part of them.

There’ll be lanes for cyclists, skaters, and those who just want to take a stroll with their loved ones or push a stroller at an easy pace. Play areas too – for little kids, big kids and inner kids! – because fun is not only found in the burbs.

Stop by the eateries, whether you’re stepping inside or sitting out on the paving, and take in the street art, the beauty of the tall buildings, and the even taller legends made in this city.

Being in Jozi is a whole feeling. And this is one of those days where you get to experience that feeling in a city that’s always called busy but, on this Sunday, makes space for you to slow down, take it in, and enjoy it all.

No fear, Jozi My Jozi is here

There’ll be no drivers playing Tetris with taxis in traffic. There’ll be marshals, volunteers, JMPD and EMS on site, ready to assist and show you the way, along with signage so you know where you are and where to go. No need to power walk. Take your time and enjoy the CBD as it opens itself up to you like you’ve never seen it before. Rediscover what it’s like to feel safe in your inner city.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

Jozi My Jozi is about bringing people back into the city, not just to move through it, but to experience it. To walk it. To meet the people. To feel pride in what’s already here. Most people only know the CBD from behind a window. This is about stepping onto the pavement and taking your time.

It’s about creating a space that feels safe and open. Supporting the businesses that keep the city going. And making it easier to walk, cycle and move through Jozi in a more human way.

Because the city belongs to the people in it.

Who should pull up?

If you live here. If you work here.
If you’ve been avoiding the CBD.
If you want to help or want to show off your business.
If you’ve been curious.
Bring the family. Bring your friends. Bring your bike, your skates, your kids, your curiosity.
Or just bring yourself.

The practical stuff

WHAT, WHERE, HOW:
Like Ghandi guiding the way, Gandhi Square is the best access point.
Walking, cycling or using public transport is your best bet.
Wear something comfortable. Bring water. Sunscreen (even in winter!). A hat.
Even prams and wheelchairs can roll through.
If the weather shifts, updates will be shared closer to the day.

TAKE THE TRAIN
Cars stay home, the city is ours – and now the Gautrain is in on the rebellion.
Take the Gautrain to Park Station, hop on the free Gautrain midibus straight to Main Street, and roll into a car-free Jozi that breathes. Less traffic, less fumes, more space for people, play, and protest business-as-usual.

Huge shoutout to Gautrain for backing a Main Street Sundays that walks the talk on sustainability, moving thousands of us on clean, efficient public transport instead of clogging the CBD with idling cars.

This is how we flip the script on how Jozi moves.

WHERE TO PARK?:
Pull through, park safely nearby, and come walk, skate, dance, and roll through the CBD like it’s yours. Our main parking site is at Standard Bank Parking, Frederick Street, Marshalltown. There’ll be plenty of signage to guide you to the fun.

Street parking is also available on surrounding streets near the Main Street route, but we encourage you to walk, cycle, or use public transport to fully embrace the car-free spirit of the day, so consider taking a taxi, bus, or the Gautrain and skip the parking hassle!
