What is FixLocal?
FixLocal is a free service allowing you to report and escalate municipal service issues in your neighbourhood. Choose your city from the list or let it detect your location, then choose the category your problem falls into. fixlocal points you to the best way to report that issue in your municipality.
Johannesburg and Soweto are both live, along with 16 other areas across the country. More are being added.
If reporting gets you nowhere, the escalate section gives you three routes:
- A councillor lookup that returns your ward councillor's contact details once you enter your location. fixlocal notes that many councillors' details are hard to find even though they are public servants, and it is working to correct that.
- Guidance on creating positive pressure.
- Guidance on mobilising your community.
Where a problem can be tackled by residents themselves, the Fix It section carries how-to guidance across environment, parks and recreation, roads and transport, safety and security, and water and sanitation. There is also a growing library of stories from communities around the country who have got things fixed.
Why we back it
Most Joburgers can tell you exactly what is broken on their street. Far fewer can tell you whose job it is to fix it, or what to do when a reference number leads nowhere. That gap is where frustration hardens into resignation.
Jozi My Jozi has adopted FixLocal because it puts the machinery of local government within reach of one person standing next to a broken streetlight.
FixLocal empowers residents to fix what is broken, and get their neighbourhood right!
