24 Hour Jozi
One city. One day. Your view.
On Saturday, 3 October 2026, photographers around the world will document their cities over one extraordinary 24-hour period.
Now it’s Jozi’s turn.
How it works
Jozi My Jozi is inviting Johannesburg residents to photograph the people, places, movement and everyday moments that keep our city alive - from midnight to midnight. Professional photographer, student, street storyteller or smartphone explorer: if you see Jozi, you can help tell its story.
1. Join the global challenge
The international 24HourProject runs from 00:00 to 23:59 local time on Saturday, 3 October 2026. You’re encouraged to take, edit and share one photograph every hour, but completing all 24 hours is not compulsory.
- All ages, experience levels and camera types are welcome.
- Participants under 18 should take part with the knowledge and supervision of a parent or legal guardian.
2. Tell Jozi’s story
Capture Johannesburg as it lives, works, moves, creates and changes:
- One hour or all 24 hours.
- Your street, neighbourhood or workplace.
- The people and places that make your part of Jozi distinctive.
- Everyday moments of work, movement, creativity, care, resilience and connection.
Look for real, unstaged moments that reveal the energy, texture and humanity of the city.
3. Share and tag
Post your selected photograph during each hour in which you participate:
- Use the official 24HourProject posting template and tags.
- Tag @24HourProject.
- Tag @jozi_my_jozi.
- Include the official 2026 campaign hashtag, #24HourJozi
- Add the time and Johannesburg location.
- Credit the photographer and add a short caption explaining the moment.
The international project monitors tagged photographs and may select images for its global channels.

Your Responsibility
JOZI IN 24 is an open, self-directed public call. It is not a centrally managed photowalk, guided tour or supervised event.
By choosing to participate, you acknowledge that:
- You take responsibility for your own personal safety, conduct and decisions.
- You choose your own locations, routes and participation times.
- You arrange and pay for your own transport, parking, data, food and other requirements.
- You remain responsible for your camera, phone and other personal belongings.
- You must assess the safety and accessibility of every place you enter.
- You must obey applicable laws, property rules and instructions from authorised officials.
- You must obtain appropriate permission before entering or photographing on private property.
- You are responsible for obtaining consent where required, especially when photographing children, vulnerable people or identifiable individuals.
- You should preferably photograph with people you know, particularly after dark.
- You may stop participating at any time if you feel unsafe, uncomfortable or fatigued.
Jozi My Jozi will not provide managed routes, transport, escorts, security personnel or individual supervision for open-call participants. Participation is voluntary and undertaken at each participant’s own risk.
Photograph With Respect
Before you publish, ask:
- Is this a real and honest moment?
- Does the image preserve the subject’s dignity?
- Do I have permission where permission is needed?
- Could publishing the image expose someone to harm?
- Does the caption provide fair and accurate context?
- Does this image reveal something meaningful about Johannesburg?
- Would I be comfortable explaining why I took and shared it?
Do not publish exploitative images of people experiencing homelessness, injury, addiction, distress or other vulnerable circumstances.
What Happens Next?
Jozi My Jozi will follow the city’s story throughout the day and curate a selection of photographs submitted by participating Johannesburg storytellers.
Selected work may be featured through:
- Jozi My Jozi’s digital platforms.
- A 24-image collection representing 24 hours in Johannesburg.
- A public online gallery.
- An exhibition in November.
- Campaign recaps and media coverage.
- Future Jozi My Jozi destination and city-storytelling initiatives, subject to agreed image permissions.
Selection is not guaranteed. When your work is published, you will be credited, in line with the participation and licensing terms accepted during submission.
