ABSA Precinct Corridor
The ABSA Precinct Revitalisation Programme is about more than clean pavements and new lights – it is about stitching a critical inner-city corridor back together. Focused on the broader ABSA precinct, the programme runs from Commissioner Street through Mooi Street and along the M2 corridor to Joe Slovo, targeting some of the city’s most visible and hard-working streets.
A comprehensive costing proposal has been tabled and approved in principle by ABSA, with contracts now being finalised to release implementation funding. This next phase will see the appointment of an independent consultant to develop a detailed corridor rehabilitation strategy, a dedicated cleaning provider to service the area seven days a week for at least six months, and a full-time Precinct Manager to keep all the moving parts aligned.
The Precinct Manager will coordinate day-to-day operations, work with the City of Johannesburg on infrastructure repairs and upgrades, and help drive a collaborative crime-reduction agenda with key stakeholders and law-enforcement partners. The ambition is clear: deliver visible, short-term wins that shift how the corridor feels and functions, while building the platform for deeper, long-term precinct regeneration.
By combining regular on-the-ground management with strategic planning, the ABSA Precinct Revitalisation Programme aims to turn a high-traffic commuter route into a cleaner, safer and more welcoming gateway into the inner city.
