Field Of Dreams

Building a sporting future for Johannesburg’s inner city

Perched alongside the M1 near the Selby offramp, the Field of Dreams is Johannesburg’s first full-size football pitch in the CBD in around a century – a green shock of hope in the middle of the city’s concrete and traffic. Developed by the Maharishi Invincibility Institute and Standard Bank, in partnership with Jozi My Jozi, Italtile and BW Cares Foundation and, the precinct proves what happens when serious civic partners decide youth deserve world-class facilities, not left-over spaces.

Built on land made available by Standard Bank, the Field of Dreams includes a full-size football field, spectator stands, multi-court facilities for basketball and netball, change rooms and a clubhouse. It is designed as a safe, accessible home ground for inner-city youth who have grown up playing in streets, alleyways and parking lots, with little access to formal sport infrastructure.

Jozi My Jozi’s role is to help embed the Field of Dreams into the broader regeneration story of the inner city: connecting sports programming, community leagues and youth development initiatives so that the facility becomes a true public asset, not a once-off ribbon-cutting moment. Over the coming years, the precinct is expected to host development academies, school tournaments, social leagues and community events, drawing young people from the CBD, nearby townships and surrounding informal settlements.

In a city where safe open space is rare and youth unemployment is high, the Field of Dreams is more than a pitch. It is a daily, visible reminder that Johannesburg is willing to invest in its young people’s bodies, minds and futures – and that inner-city kids deserve a home ground worthy of their ambition.
