Light Up Jozi campaign

More than just hardware
Light Up Jozi is how residents, partners and city lovers are literally putting the lights back on in Jozi and making it safer to walk, trade and live here. Since launch, we have installed more than 2,000 solar-powered streetlights across the inner city, improving lighting on over 42 kilometres of priority routes and corridors.
Every new light is more than hardware. It cuts risk, boosts visibility and helps people reclaim spaces that were once defined by darkness and fear. This is community power, not a parallel government. Light Up Jozi works alongside the City to accelerate urban safety while broader service delivery challenges are being fixed. As the network grows, so does its impact: better-lit streets mean stronger connections between precincts, more night-time economic activity and renewed confidence in Johannesburg’s public spaces.
We are now pushing into the next wave of roll-out, targeting streets and corridors where poor visibility still shapes how people move, work and feel after dark. Businesses, foundations and civic partners can plug in by sponsoring key routes, backing operations or helping scale a proven, high-impact urban safety intervention.
Every additional light pushes the footprint further – more blocks lit, more kilometres made walkable, and one step closer to a Jozi that feels as alive at night as it does by day.
Our target is to raise R300 000 to install the solar-powered lights. Every contribution counts!
