Main Street Sundays
Our Open Streets Programme is about one simple idea: Jozi works better when the streets belong to people, not just cars. Main Street Sundays is our flagship experiment – a full city block in the CBD turned into an inner-city living room for a day: no traffic, no hooting, just kids playing, skaters cruising, gogos on camp chairs, readers in quiet corners and neighbours actually greeting each other.
From the magistrates’ court to Gandhi Square, Main Street is closed to vehicles and opened up in themed zones - wellness, kids’ play, active mobility, arts and crafts, live music, food and reading rooms. Makers, traders, artists and small businesses trade in a safe, family-friendly environment while residents walk, cycle and skate a route they usually only see through a car window. It’s not a festival; it’s a reset button for how we use public space.
Main Street Sundays is the first move in a broader Open Streets network for Joburg - a proof-of-concept that shows the CBD can be walkable, welcoming and full of life when we design it around people first.
Main Street Sundays pull people back into the inner city on foot, letting them taste its neighbourhoods block by block.
Main Street Sundays
We’re closing off the roads to cars and taking back our streets for the day, and everyone’s invited. Woza, Jozi! Bring the whole group chat, the little ones, ama-2k and even gogo, and make a day of it. With food, art, music, activities, and plenty more for all ages, it’s sure to be a Sunday to remember.
