Responsible Giving: Pathways Out of Homelessness
Dropping coins at the robot might ease guilt, but it doesn’t shift the system.
The Responsible Giving initiative, built with Zlto, Mi-Change, MES and U-Turn, is Jozi My Jozi’s answer to the “What can I actually do?” question.
The solution works like a three-legged stool:
- Zlto provides the digital backbone that makes voucher allocation, earning, redemption and tracking possible at scale, with technical support from Dis-Chem.
- Mi-Change coordinates the voucher system, onboarding service providers and connecting them into the Zlto platform.
- Implementers like U-Turn, MES and other NGOs do the day-to-day work with people on the streets, offering services, creating opportunities to earn vouchers through meaningful activity, and linking individuals into deeper development programmes.
Supported as the official cause of the 2026 702 / Jozi My Jozi Walk the Talk, the initiative aims to support more than 10 000 people experiencing homelessness in Johannesburg and Soweto over the next three to five years. It turns impulsive giving into structured pathways out of homelessness – not just handouts, but hand-ups.
